Interior repaint, open-plan living room in Merced

An open-plan living and kitchen room in Merced, repainted inside — walls, ceiling, the support post and all the trim. Both photographs are taken from the same corner: one with the room papered and masked, one after the paint was on.

During preparation: an open-plan living room in Merced with the tile floor papered wall to wall and taped, the kitchen counter under plastic sheeting, both ceiling fixtures bagged and the window and door frames masked.

Con qué empezamos

The room was carrying two different wall colours and a lot of small damage — filled holes, scuffs and old fixings — that showed through under a flat finish and made the walls read as patchy rather than plain.

Lo que hicimos

The tile floor was papered wall to wall, the counter and cabinets sheeted, the ceiling fixtures bagged and the windows and door frames masked before anything was opened. Walls were brought to one even colour, with the ceiling, baseboards and the support post cut in by hand.

Why an interior job is mostly covering up

On an occupied house the expensive mistake is not a bad brush line, it is paint on a floor that cannot be replaced. Everything in this room that was not being painted was covered before a single tin was opened: the tile papered across its whole area and taped at the edges, the kitchen counter and cabinets under plastic, both ceiling fixtures bagged, and the window and door frames masked.

That is the first photograph. It is not a tidy picture, and it is the part of the job that decides whether the finished room looks like anything.

Filling before colour

Walls in a lived-in room collect small damage — picture fixings, knocks, old filled holes that were never sanded flat. Flat paint does not hide any of it; if anything it shows it up, because there is no sheen to distract the eye. Each one gets filled, sanded back and spot-primed so it does not flash through the finish coat as a dull patch.

Ceilings, trim and the post

The ceiling and the baseboards are painted separately from the walls and in a different finish, which means two clean cut lines around the whole room, done by hand. The structural post in the middle of the floor is cut in on all four faces. There is no way to spray around any of this on an interior job without masking far more than it is worth.

Interior painting in Merced

Interior work is not weather-dependent the way exterior work is, so it runs year round across Merced and Stanislaus counties. Pedro does the work himself, which on an interior matters more than it sounds: the person who covered your floor is the person who has to walk on it all week.
