Decks, staining and sealing
Stripped, sanded and sealed. A deck in this climate needs it every few years or the boards go grey and split.
A deck takes more sun than any other wood on the property and gets walked on wet. Left alone in this valley it greys off, then the grain raises, then the boards start splitting — and at that point staining it is no longer the fix.
What is involved
Old finish stripped or sanded back, boards cleaned, and any raised grain sanded flat so the new coat soaks in evenly instead of sitting in patches. Then stain and seal.
How often
Every few years here, sooner on a deck with no shade at all. If water still beads on it, it is fine. When water soaks straight in, it is due.
Fences and patio covers
Same work, same trip. Doing them together usually costs less than doing them separately, and they will age at the same rate afterwards.
