Popcorn ceiling removal

Popcorn ceilings date a house faster than any colour on the walls. Taking one off is straightforward work and extremely messy work, and the whole job is really about controlling the mess.

How it is done

The room is sealed and everything in it covered — floors, and anything that cannot be moved out. The texture is scraped off wet, which keeps the dust down enormously compared with scraping dry. Then the ceiling is skimmed and re-textured to match the rest of the house, primed, and painted.

A house built before 1978

Ask about this before anything is scraped. Textured ceilings from that era can contain materials that need testing and specialist handling, and we are not certified for that work. If your house is that old, get the ceiling tested first — a good painter will tell you to, and it costs far less than finding out afterwards.

Worth doing at the same time

If the walls are being painted anyway, do the ceiling first. Doing it afterwards means masking walls you just finished.
