Paint does not stick to dust. An exterior wall in this valley carries a season of ag dust, road film and chalked-out old paint, and rolling fresh colour over that is painting onto a layer that is already letting go.

Part of every exterior

Washing is day one of an exterior repaint, not an add-on. It is included, and it is not optional — a painter who offers to skip it to save you money is offering to make your paint fail early.

On its own

Plenty of houses do not need painting, they need washing. Mildew on the north wall, green on the shaded side, a driveway that has not been touched in years. Ask.

Mildew and efflorescence

Neither comes off with water alone. Mildew grows back through paint if it is only rinsed, and efflorescence — the white powder that blooms out of masonry — is the wall telling you moisture is moving through it. Both get treated, not just washed.
