Exterior stucco repaint, single-storey home in Merced
A single-storey stucco home in Merced, repainted outside — walls, fascia, eaves and window trim. Both photographs are taken from the same spot on the patio: one with the masking still up, one after the paint was on.
What we started with
The stucco had been patched in several places and the old colour was still showing through where the patches had been cut back. From the patio the back wall read as three different shades, none of them the colour it was meant to be.
What we did
Every window, the door and the ground were masked and covered before a brush came out. The walls were painted out to one even colour, and the fascia, eaves and window trim were cut in by hand.
What an exterior repaint on stucco involves
Stucco is not a forgiving surface to paint. It is porous, it holds dust deep in the texture, and it moves with the heat — which in Merced means a wall that expands all summer and contracts every night. Paint that goes onto an unwashed or unsealed stucco wall does not fail immediately. It fails in about three years, and it fails from underneath.
Most of the work on a job like this happens before any colour goes on: washing the wall down, cutting back and filling the patched areas, matching the texture so the repairs do not read through the finish, and masking everything that is not being painted. The photograph on the left is that stage — the windows sheeted in plastic, the door covered, a drop cloth over the patio.
The colour change
The back of this house was carrying at least three tones: the original colour, the patches, and the areas that had been cut back to bare stucco. Covering that evenly is a question of preparation and of putting on enough material, not of one thick coat. The finished wall is a single warm off-white, with the fascia, the eaves and the window trim brought up to match.
Exterior painting in Merced
